  • Vet Research Animal Specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital
    A Research Animal Specialist provides husbandry to laboratory animals, maintains animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records and performs facility sanitation in CCM animal facilities at Massachusetts General Hospital. This is a great opportunity for new college graduates with animal science or biology majors at one of the leading academic research hospitals in the country! ‘ Able to perform all duties and responsibilities of Research Animal Specialist I level. ‘ Performs daily work involving the handling of genetically engineered animal models, animals with immuno- compromised health status, animals recovering from surgery or other invasive procedures, neonates, etc. ‘ Changes cages or pens following proper technique and ensures that animals are not contaminated when outside of their primary enclosure ‘ Maintain animal rooms (secondary enclosures) in a clean state so that secondary infections or other contamination do not occur. Animal room maintenance should include sanitation monitoring performed by taking bacterial cultures or RODAC plating. ‘ Evaluate animal’s health each day and report abnormal clinical signs to the veterinary staff via electronic data capture system; performs treatments as prescribed by the veterinary staff and reports progress of therapies. ‘ Performs weaning when requested by researcher or veterinary staff assuring that each animal’s sex is accurately determined and that females and males are properly separated. Palpates breeding animals to determine if females are pregnant and separates them prior to parturition. ‘ Report facility and environmental issues that fall outside animal welfare regulatory requirements (as defined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) to the supporting MGH department as a representative to the Facility Manager. ‘ In the absence of the Facility Manager or his/her designee, responsible for receiving and processing incoming animals and supplies. ‘ Sanitize animal facility equipment including the use of tunnel washers, rack washers, acidified watering systems and autoclaves for sterilization. Makes sure that equipment is working properly using biological monitoring devices and techniques. ‘ Operates cage washer, autoclave and other animal facility equipment. ‘ Assemble caging supplies with properly sterilized feed (previously irradiated) and water (acidified and/or autoclave) in a manner that assures that they remain sterile throughout the handling process. ‘ May provide specialized technical assistance to CCM veterinarians and investigators. ‘ Participates in animal quarantine and health surveillance programs for the facility. ‘ Performs containment and monitoring duties in the case of infection or disease health outbreaks or other biocontainment situations. ‘ Implements environmental enrichment program intended to minimize animal stress in the research setting. ‘ Performs routine euthanasia on laboratory animals according to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) Panel on Euthanasia ‘ Attend technician meetings and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care and uses of animals in biomedical research as scheduled by the supervisory staff ‘ Provide guidance and training to new animal technicians. ‘ Comply with CCM and MGH policies and standard operating procedures. This position requires weekend and holiday work hours. This position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.
