The animal technologist is responsible for care and handling of small animals and their environment in accordance with institutional, USDA, AALAC, and NIH accreditation standard operating procedures. Required: Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or Animal Science or Veterinary Technician Certification plus experience. Required: No experience with required degree. May substitute required education degree with equivalent experience on a one to one basis. With substitution, one additional year of animal care experience in a lead capacity is required. Certification: Required: American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Certification within 180 days of eligibility. Preferred: American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification. WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Must wear protective clothing daily to include scrubs, mask, cap, latex gloves, boots and respirator.

    • Must work with biohazardous radioactive and other hazardous chemicals, as well as water, detergents, disinfectants and similar cleaning solution/agents.

    The Animal Technologist is responsible for the following activities:
    • Makes daily health monitoring inspections of all conventional and quarantine small animal facilities and reports finding to the Clinical Veterinarian. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing any health problems and understand written and verbal direction of Veterinarian.
    • Contacts small animal supervisors to coordinate release of animals from quarantine to conventional and biohazard housing areas.
    • Receives all incoming rodents, hamsters, and guinea pigs, according to standard Operating Procedures. Submits appropriate records concerning incoming animals to administrative staff and supervisory staff in a timely manner.
    • Prepares all cage cards for housing of incoming rodents, which are presented to the ancillary facilities with shipping carton. Schedules, coordinates, and performs quarterly sentinel monitoring as requested. Forwards data to the Supervisor.
    • Coordinates quarterly surface samplings of equipment processed through washroom equipment and quarterly surface samplings of areas animal housing & support facility. The samples are submitted to laboratory and reports are provided to the Supervisor.
    • Schedules, coordinates, and performs monthly blood collection of non-nude sentinels in barrier facility and submit for routine MHV testing. Forwards data to the Senior Supervisor.
    • Performs treatments to small animals as directed by veterinary staff. Maintains treatment records and submits records to the Small Animal Supervisor on a monthly basis. These records are used to generate status reports. APPLY
