The Veterinary Services hospital interns function in two roles, one is as the primary wildlife case contact, the other is as assistant to the veterinary technicians. The successful applicant must have a veterinary degree and a postgraduate qualification that allows for registration as a Specialist in small animal surgery in NSW. The UVTHS has benefited recently from major financial support. The Valentine Charlton Cat Centre, which opened in 2004, has gained international recognition as a state-of-the-art feline referral facility, generating large clinical research output and offering residency training programs in feline medicine. The $2.8 million Canine Centre opened in early 2008 and presents as one of the most sophisticated teaching hospitals in the country. New equipment acquisitions include MRI, CT, computed radiography and videoendoscopy. The hospital is supported by an extensive range of specialist staff in orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic imaging, medicine, neurology, dermatology and ophthalmology.
