Veterinary Medical Officer, Department Of The Army, SAN ANTONIO, TX
Plans, directs, and participates in the care, treatment, and management of laboratory animals and other government-owned animals. Activities include physical exams, sedating/anesthetizing animals, monitoring patients, performing humane euthanasia when required, and ensuring security of controlled drugs. Demonstrates procedures for preparing animals for laboratory use, secures animals for surgery, and prepares equipment and rooms for conducting surgery. Initiates on-the-spot-corrective action, as appropriate, to ensure protocol compliance. Presents pre-training briefings to faculty and students. Ensures training documentation is properly completed. Provides instruction on the care, treatment, and management of laboratory animals and other government-owned animals to a variety of laboratory classes utilizing animals in the training of veterinary personnel. Utilizes knowledge and understanding of law, regulation, guidelines and responsibilities regarding animal care and use.
May be required to perform pre-training nonresident site surveys at locations around the world. The best qualified candidates for this position must show in their resume that they meet the minimum qualifications and have experience in the following areas: Basic requirement: Mastery of veterinary medical science concepts, principles and practices is required in anatomy, bacteriology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, microbiology, parasitology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, serology, toxicology, virology, routine veterinary surgical procedures, patient sedation/anesthesia, preparation, monitoring and recovery, and other basic clinical sciences applicable. Expert knowledge in the detection, diagnosis, disposition, transmission, and epidemiology of animal conditions. Expert knowledge in routine husbandry practices and the use of various drugs, biologics, and pesticides and their effects upon animals used in medical training programs. Professional skill in maintaining accounting records for controlled pharmaceuticals. Technical requirement: Prescribe and administer medications, including controlled pharmaceuticals. Provide instructional briefings to students and trainees. Conduct physical examination of animals and perform routine surgical and post-mortem procedures. Obtain and interpret relevant clinical data and histories of affected animals and associate these with other findings. Monitor the results of medications, treatments, surgery, and manage changes for effectiveness and adjust treatment strategies as necessary. Evaluate and advise the regulated community regarding the humane handling, husbandry, maintenance, transportation, housing, and veterinary care of animals used in training. Ensure compliance with relevant veterinary regulations and laws. Perform routine sedation, anesthesia, patient preparation, surgery, patient monitoring and recovery. Assure compliance with AAALAC standards and Animal Welfare Act requirements. OR One year of progressively responsible professional veterinary experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Ph.D. degree in an area of specialization, including but not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position. Veterinarians who successfully complete all requirements for Diplomate status in an ABVS-recognized veterinary specialty organization may qualify for the GS-13 grade level. Successful completion of three years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position.
