Pathology residents will develop skills in gross pathology and histopathology by participating in a busy diagnostic laboratory service. These basic pathology skills will be supplemented by training in clinical and comparative pathology. Residents will also participate in the pathology teaching for the sophomore pathology laboratory and instruct senior veterinary students on necropsy rotations. Residents are expected to actively participate in weekly seminars in gross, microscopic and clinical pathology and other specialty pathology rounds. A diverse faculty, including eleven pathologists who are ACVP certified in anatomic or clinical pathology, supports this program. The caseload includes a wide variety of domestic, wild and exotic animals, birds, and laboratory rodents submitted to Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Cancer Center Comparative Pathology Shared Resource Laboratory. Residents have an option to specialize in food animal or experimental pathology after completion of the first year of training. After completion of the residency program, qualified individuals may apply for T32 NIH-funded post-doctoral training program in Comparative Medicine and Pathology or another graduate program of their choice, which provides focused research training leading to the PhD degree.
