- Veterinary Technician Jobs, Cincinnati
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Provide routine and/or specialized laboratory animal husbandry and care of research animals, including feeding, watering, changing animal cages, monitoring the health of the animal colonies, and maintaining the animal holding rooms and support areas in compliance with AAALAC standards for the Veterinary Services Division of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children, and adolescents.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Capable of performing the duties and responsibilities of an Animal Technician II position.
2. Follow strict protocols for sterile or disease control environments for animal welfare.
3. Monitor and maintain the health status of the animal colonies.
4. Ensure that the animals have daily food and water according to their particular requirements.
5. Maintain cleanliness of animal cages and facilities by using foamers, floor maintenance machines or
hand-operated utensils.
6. Change bedding, papers, and pan liners as specified; remove waste in a safe sanitary manner while minimizing potential aerosol contaminants in animal rooms.
7. Maintain per diem sheets, daily log and other records as required.
8. Identify and report emergency situations or problems as needed.
9. Should have competency and proficiency in all areas of husbandry, minimally two areas.
10. Observe animals in your stewardship daily and report any deviation from normal.
11. Maintain assigned work areas in compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations. Ensure all areas
are in compliance with AAALAS Standards.
12. Responsible for making some decisions that requires consideration of various criteria. Decisions are
usually within limits prescribed by established policies or by area coordinator.
13. Under general supervision, proceed alone on regular tasks, referring questionable situations to the coordinator.
14. Responsible for technical support to ensure all assigned animal care assignments and scheduled work is
completed in a satisfactory manner.
15. Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature, and seminars. Implement this knowledge
into the Veterinary Services Division.
16. Upon direction by the designated husbandry coordinator, train Veterinary Husbandry Technicians I and II.
17. Provide functional supervision to temporary employees and provide on the job training for other employees.
18. Provide information to husbandry coordinator concerning performance of area husbandry technicians. Assist
in developing and setting measurable goals for use in evaluations of employees.
19. Provide backup supervision in the absence of the area coordinator.
20. Assist coordinator in assigned responsibilities.
21. Assist, contribute and influence decisions of various policies, procedures, research and planning.
22. Participate in the movement and storage of feed.
23. Participate in the continuing education program.
24. Respect patient rights for informed consent and the handling of confidential information as described by
DCHMC’s mission and applicable laws and regulations.
25. Provide services in a manner to be regularly and conveniently available to meet the needs of CCHMC’s
patients, families, and employees as determined by divisional management and CCHMC’s governing body.
26. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas of approaches for
improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department
discussions.
27. Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency.
28. Ensure that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective, and efficient environment for employees, patients, and families.
29. Attend as required CCHMC training session, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne
pathogens, and OSHA. Comply with infectious control policies and procedures.
30. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Capable of relating to diverse age and demographic backgrounds. Possess decision-making abilities requiring the equal application of established policies and procedures. Mastered the skills and techniques in all areas of operations in the designated husbandry area. Have good organizational skills. Able to set priorities through anticipation of divisional needs. Possess a courteous, positive, and service oriented demeanor. Demonstrate high manual dexterity and attention to detail. Physical stamina sufficient to perform frequent bending, standing, and lifting, pulling and pushing equipment weighing 50 pounds or more in a temperature/humidity controlled environment.
EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE: Formal training beyond a High School Diploma or equivalent. Appropriate vocational skills, minimum experience of three years in a laboratory animal facility or related field. AALAS certification preferred. Expectation is to complete certification for Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) through AALAS or be eligible for certification.
