The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, in cooperation with the University Veterinarian, are seeking a veterinarian with interest in laboratory animal medicine to provide and supervise medical care to animals used in the teaching and research programs. The successful candidate also will be required to teach in an annual, semester-long course “laboratory Animal Management”. This is a full-time, calendar-year, non-tenure track, clinical instructor position reporting dually to the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as to the University Veterinarian. The Clinical Laboratory Veterinarian will be responsible for providing veterinary support for a comprehensive animal care program and overseeing the health and well-being of College owned research and teaching animals.
Required Qualifications
A degree in Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited school and a higher degree (Master’s or PhD) with a focus on Laboratory Animal Medicine. Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States and in the State of Virginia. Must be eligible for an FBI background check to obtain access into ABSL-3 facilities where Select Agents are housed and used. Must be able to communicate effectively and work within a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer at least three years of professional experience in laboratory animal medicine.

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree from a foreign university by the start date and possess excellent communication skills. Candidate selection will be based on strength of academic record, level and quality of experience, recommendations, and commitment to a career in veterinary pathology. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical, research, and/or pathology-related experience. The program is designed to give the residents broad exposure to basic and applied aspects of veterinary pathology and prepare them for a career in veterinary pathology. Residents successfully completing the program will be qualified to take the ACVP Board examination.
Pathology residents will develop skills in gross pathology and histopathology by participating in a busy diagnostic laboratory service. These basic pathology skills will be supplemented by training in clinical and comparative pathology. Residents will also participate in the pathology teaching for the sophomore pathology laboratory and instruct senior veterinary students on necropsy rotations. Residents are expected to actively participate in weekly seminars in gross, microscopic and clinical pathology and other specialty pathology rounds. A diverse faculty, including eleven pathologists who are ACVP certified in anatomic or clinical pathology, supports this program.
The caseload includes a wide variety of domestic, wild and exotic animals, birds, and laboratory rodents submitted to Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Cancer Center Comparative Pathology Shared Resource Laboratory. Residents have an option to specialize in food animal or experimental pathology after completion of the first year of training. After completion of the residency program, qualified individuals may apply for T32 NIH-funded post-doctoral training program in Comparative Medicine and Pathology or another graduate program of their choice, which provides focused research training leading to the PhD degree.
