Massachusetts General Hospital is looking for an animal technician. The candidate will provides husbandry to laboratory animals, maintains animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records and performs facility sanitation in CCM animal facilities.
Jobs and Duties:
Changes cages or pens following aseptic technique and assures that animals are not contaminated; Performs daily work involving the handling of genetically engineered animal models, animals recovering from surgery, animals with immuno-compromised health status, or other invasive procedures, neonates, etc.; Evaluate animal’s health each day and report abnormal clinical signs to the veterinary staff; Maintain animal rooms and facility hallways in a clean state so that secondary infections or other contamination do not occur; Use current technology including PDAs and bar code application to record animal health observations, daily cage census, weaned cages, and other important management practices; Track progress of neonates and determine when animals should be weaned; Assists the Facility Manager or his/her designee with incoming animals and supplies; Report facility and environmental issues that fall outside animal welfare regulatory requirements to the Facility Manager or designee; Operates cage washer, autoclave and other animal facility equipment; Sanitize animal facility equipment including the use of rack washers, tunnel washers, autoclaves for sterilization and acidified watering systems; Attend technician meetings and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care and uses of animals in biomedical research as scheduled by the supervisory staff; Assemble caging supplies with properly sterilized feed and water; Record critical facility data/documentation on a daily basis required by local, state and federal regulatory agencies overseeing how animals are cared for and used in research, teaching and education; Work weekends and holidays, as assigned.
Requirements: High school diploma or equivalency degree preferred; Experience in care of animals preferred. This position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products. This position also may require weekend and holiday work hours. Work schedule is primarily 7:00 am – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, but schedule may be assigned by the Facility Manager or his/her designee for that specific animal facility. APPLY ONLINE

As our Veterinary Technician you will act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarians to ensure the best quality Pet care for our clients. You will be an advocate for pets by educating clients on all aspects of pet health. Our clients have small to medium sized animals requiring specialized MRI services. We take effort to never lose sight of the special human-animal bond.
You will be working in a state-of-the-art practice and must be able to run lab work (including blood and urine), read EKG’s, place and remove catheters and IV’s, as well as assist with anesthesia in order to ensure proper animal diagnostic imaging.
You will also ensure the safety of Pets, clients and team members by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs. You will learn and follow all state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
You will obtain and record relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
What you need:
- Registered Vet Tech / Licensed Vet Tech status
- 3+ years of hands on experience under a Vet
- Ability to travel to local clinics
- Any MRI expertise a major plus
- Intravet knowledge or experience a major plus
- Ability to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds
