The Large Animal Clinical Sciences department of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor in Veterinary Clinical Nutrition. This is a full-time, non-tenure track, calendar year, restricted appointment on our Blacksburg, VA campus and reports directly to the Department Head of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical nutrition consultation services to primary care services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), as well as providing phone consultation on nutrition to clients and referring veterinarians within the practice area of the VTH. Other duties include training senior students and directing the academic program of interns and residents in Clinical Nutrition; performing as course leader and participating in delivery of didactic nutrition courses in the veterinary curriculum; participating actively in other courses in the Vet Med curriculum as needed; undertaking limited scholarship/investigations on translational research related to nutrition; working collegially within the section, VTH, Large Animal department, College, and wider University; participating in committees within the College; and providing input to the Hospital Director or Department Head as to relevant mechanisms to improve the delivery of nutrition services.

Jobs and Duties:
Changes cages or pens following aseptic technique and assures that animals are not contaminated; Performs daily work involving the handling of genetically engineered animal models, animals recovering from surgery, animals with immuno-compromised health status, or other invasive procedures, neonates, etc.; Evaluate animal’s health each day and report abnormal clinical signs to the veterinary staff; Maintain animal rooms and facility hallways in a clean state so that secondary infections or other contamination do not occur; Use current technology including PDAs and bar code application to record animal health observations, daily cage census, weaned cages, and other important management practices; Track progress of neonates and determine when animals should be weaned; Assists the Facility Manager or his/her designee with incoming animals and supplies; Report facility and environmental issues that fall outside animal welfare regulatory requirements to the Facility Manager or designee; Operates cage washer, autoclave and other animal facility equipment; Sanitize animal facility equipment including the use of rack washers, tunnel washers, autoclaves for sterilization and acidified watering systems; Attend technician meetings and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care and uses of animals in biomedical research as scheduled by the supervisory staff; Assemble caging supplies with properly sterilized feed and water; Record critical facility data/documentation on a daily basis required by local, state and federal regulatory agencies overseeing how animals are cared for and used in research, teaching and education; Work weekends and holidays, as assigned.
Requirements: High school diploma or equivalency degree preferred; Experience in care of animals preferred. This position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products. This position also may require weekend and holiday work hours.
