Requirements: Associate Degree in Veterinary Technician Program. At least three years of experience with demonstrated competence as a veterinary technician with Ohio State Licensure as a Veterinary Technician preferred. Duties and Responsibilities: Assists investigators, PIs, the veterinarian and the animal care staff with performing technical procedures; monitors the health and well-being of all animals housed in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU); Maintains accurate records and ensures that areas that require medical supplies are adequately supplied, under the supervision of The Biological Resources Unit Veterinarian.
Required Physical: Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job, must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors and sights; significant amount of standing, bending, and walking; Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds; must have the ability to complete the job before leaving work.
Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU. May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training. In this position, you will have a dynamic, multifaceted role protecting consumers as a Public Health Veterinarian. Your duties will encompass closely planning, organizing, coordinating and adapting the full range of meat and poultry inspection operations in privately owned establishments.
You will conduct food safety assessments of one or more slaughter and/or processing establishments to ensure processes, procedures, facilities and equipment are technically and scientifically sound and meet regulatory and public health protection regulations.
As a Public Health Veterinarian, you will also ensure that plants meet requirements of the Pathogen Reduction and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations, as well as overseeing
other consumer protection, non-food safety concerns such as proper labeling.
You will utilize communication skills by regularly conferring with plant management to ensure regulatory requirements are met. In addition, you may supervise other FSIS employees such as one or more
food inspectors and/or consumer safety inspectors.
You will be directing ante mortem and post mortem inspection of livestock and/or poultry to detect, identify and diagnose conditions that may render food products unfit for human consumption. You will
also be responsible for overseeing the humane handling and slaughter of livestock, and providing veterinary medical expertise on the proper disposition of animals and/or carcasses.
