The Veterinary Services hospital interns function in two roles, one is as the primary wildlife case contact, the other is as assistant to the veterinary technicians. This internship is designed to give students experience in a veterinary hospital setting where they will have the opportunity to provide patient care, keep accurate records and develop relationships with our staff of keepers, technicians and veterinarians. The wildlife intern is responsible for receiving all wildlife cases that come to the veterinary hospital from Walt Disney World property. This includes assessment, triage, giving necessary care as directed by the animal care staff and veterinarians, animal transport to rehabilitation facilities, maintenance of all records and data bases. This includes setting up supplies/equipment prior to procedures, maintenance of stock/supplies in the veterinary hospital and at satellite facilities, clean up after procedures, cleaning/packing/sterilizing instruments, assistance with sample preparation and related laboratory paperwork. The technician’s assistant provides support to the veterinary technicians. The interns are also responsible for Guest interaction and giving presentations in the on show veterinary treatment window.

Conduct gross and microscopic examinations of animal tissues from toxicology and investigative studies and interpret and explore the significance of results of clinical pathology, organ weight, necropsy, and histopathology data. Create or contribute to pathology reports that accurately and completely reflect the data collected and the significance of the data to drug registration and human safety. Provide investigative pathology leadership for drug discovery teams. Qualification: This position requires a DVM preferably with PhD in Pathology or a related field and Board-certified/?eligible by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.? Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines and 3-5 years experience working in pharmaceutical industry.? Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to foster productive dialog on complex topics is required as well as the ability to contribute effectively to sound decision making in a manner that is timely and consensus based.? Responsible for the daily care of research animals within the Receiving and Quarantine facility, to include the routine animal housekeeping and facility cleaning duties associated with an Animal Caretaker II. Will spend a major portion of time performing specialized technical procedures necessary to maintain continuous operation of the Receiving and Quarantine facility, focused on husbandry functions and diagnostic sampling. Work is reviewed by senior level staff to ensure conformance to experimental and therapeutic protocols. Strict adherence to safety protocols is necessary and personal protective equipment may be required. Work shall be checked periodically for application of proper techniques.
