Individual must be a high school graduate or have a GED and must have or obtain AALAS certification at Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician ALAT level within 18 months of employment. Individual must be able to follow directions, communicate effectively, and work well in a team environment. Individual will have the physical stamina and dexterity needed to handle laboratory animals, including species that may be difficult to work with, and to use personal protective equipment. Individual will have demonstrated ability to understand and follow SOPs and to perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Responsibilities: Provide daily report all unusual observations regarding animal health to appropriate supervisory personnel, Provide proper feed and clean caging to laboratory animals and check drinking water system in assigned area rooms. Monitor condition of animal rooms and equipment in rooms, environmental parameters, and proper functioning of mechanical systems e.g., lighting, HVAC, automatic drinking water system in assigned area rooms, daily report all unusual observations regarding facilities or equipment malfunctions to appropriat supervisory personnel. Sanitize animal cages, bottles, feeders, autoclaves, operate cage washers, and other equipment.

The primary responsibilities for this full-time 10-month, tenure track position is to fulfill duties as the Assistant Director of the program and also serve as the academic advisor for all veterinary technology students in the college, including potential students seeking information about the program. Other responsibilities to include teaching a full-time course load (15-18 didactic and laboratory contact hrs per week, including off-site facilities), provide animal health care needs including routine surgical procedures and dentistry, manage and participate in off-site clinical experiences with students, maintenance of the program’s waiting list including written contact with students about their status on the waiting list and acceptance into the program, college committee work as required for reappointment and tenure process, and additional responsibilities as assigned.
Min. Qualifications: Applicants must hold a DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and be licensed to practice in the State of Ohio. A min. of 5 yrs. of clinical exp. is required and must have experience in the areas of clinical diagnostic medicine, anesthesia, dentistry and routine surgical procedures. The Large Animal Clinical Sciences department of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor in Veterinary Clinical Nutrition. This is a full-time, non-tenure track, calendar year, restricted appointment on our Blacksburg, VA campus and reports directly to the Department Head of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical nutrition consultation services to primary care services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), as well as providing phone consultation on nutrition to clients and referring veterinarians within the practice area of the VTH. Other duties include training senior students and directing the academic program of interns and residents in Clinical Nutrition; performing as course leader and participating in delivery of didactic nutrition courses in the veterinary curriculum; participating actively in other courses in the Vet Med curriculum as needed; undertaking limited scholarship/investigations on translational research related to nutrition; working collegially within the section, VTH, Large Animal department, College, and wider University; participating in committees within the College; and providing input to the Hospital Director or Department Head as to relevant mechanisms to improve the delivery of nutrition services.
