    Will be responsible for performing veterinary services at the Animal Services Shelter including examining, evaluating, diagnosing, treating, vaccinating, sterilizing, and euthanizing animals; supervise the rabies control program, provide training to staff, and provide professional advice, expert testimony, and/or information to citizens, boards, committees, and in court proceedings. Administer the rabies control; surgically spay or neuter animals of various sizes, temperaments, and ages, including feral and/or pre-pubertal; examine impounded animals and prescribes, implements, and oversees medical treatment protocols for sick and/or injured animals; prescribe euthanasia for severely sick and/or injured animals in accordance with city policies and state regulations; provide staff training regarding animal husbandry, humane animal handling, sanitation and disease control, basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical support and first aid for animals; provide routine veterinary care including: triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis and treatment of ill and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccinations, and testing as required; develop and implement local ordinances and city policies pertaining to animal care and control; respond to inquiries from the public and City Officials and assists in resolving complaints in an efficient and timely manner; receive animal records from staff; input animal record dispositions and care instructions into computer; prepare monthly and weekly reports according to established guidelines; requisition and maintain controlled drugs and equipment and ensures proper security, chain of custody protocols, storage, utilization, and accounting of supplies and equipment in accordance with applicable city policies and state and federal regulations and laws; maintain current knowledge in veterinary medicine regarding trends and innovations in animal sheltering, sterilization procedures, and care for animals; provide input to the Animal Services Manager regarding new programs, procedures, and protocols; attend various meetings and provide presentations and/or reports as needed; develop and provide staff training to assist staff in obtaining State of Texas Euthanasia Technician certification; assist staff in euthanizing animals. Extensive knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations including controlled substances and common animal diseases and behaviors, and animal capture, tranquilizing, vaccination, euthanasia and handling techniques. Knowledge of infectious diseases, conditions, and behaviors typically found in animals and occurring in an animal shelter environment, and effective disinfection and quarantine procedures and techniques of animal field chemical capture, transport, and humane handling techniques. Effective written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with large groups, media and citizens; effective conflict resolution, multi-tasking, and managing non-routine or emergency circumstances. Ability to prepare and oversee staff training and to accurately recognize, diagnose, and treat illnesses injuries, and diseases in a variety of domestic animals. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of related experience with animal shelter experience preferred. Current State of Texas Veterinary Medicine license required Texas Class C driver’s license with no major violations within the past 3 years. This will be a one year appointment with 38 weeks of assigned clinic duty. The primary job responsibility will be to lead a surgical service (orthopedics or soft tissue).
