Duties and Responsibilities: Perform cleaning, sterilization and disinfection of the surgical instruments, surgical suite, and equipments; Assist veterinary staff in preparation and performing surgical procedures; Communicate regularly with hospital supervisors/ managers regarding animal medical and husbandry management including but not limited to medical procedures, training, nutrition, and behavioral enrichment; Assist with creating and maintaining accurate medical record documentation that is required during an animal procedure or prescription request; Assist with maintaining current pharmacy, treatment areas, animal, and equipment inventory; Assist with ordering drug and medical supplies and inventory maintenance; Assist in administering medications and vaccinations as directed by veterinarians; Accurately dispense and record medical prescriptions as directed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct diagnostic radiography, including positioning of the patient, exposure, and development of radiographs; Operate and maintain radiographic equipment; Assist in reporting maintenance needs and perform minor maintenance tasks; Maintain and monitor anesthesia, including the operation of inhalation anesthesia equipment and patient monitoring devices; Train interns, seasonal employees, volunteers, and assist in training full-time vet tech/keeper as assigned; Under necessary conditions, assist with sample preparation, clean animal enclosures, pools, and service areas as required; Communicate with and assist guests; Monitor guests to insure animal and human safety and protection of park property.
Requirements: Licensure in the state of Illinois (within 90 days of hire); Graduation from an AVMA certified school of veterinary technology required; Animal keeper experience preferred; Minimum of one (1) year experience as a certified veterinary technician with 1-2 years experience working with zoo/exotic animals preferred; Detailed and current knowledge of veterinary medical practices, basic pharmacology, animal anatomy and physiology and principles of anesthesia required; Excellent technical skills including proficient restraint, intravenous catheter placement, patient monitoring, sample collections techniques, with domestic animals required and preferable with exotic animals; Must be able to work with live animals safely; Detailed and current knowledge of natural history, principles of animal behavior and husbandry required; Knowledge of infection control and quarantine practices; Knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical equipment cleaning and sterilization; Must demonstrate knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices around such hazards; Must be able to deliver various medications through standard practices; Knowledgeable in the management of captive populations including related AZA conservation programs; Solid communication and interpersonal skills; Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) required; Must be capable of dealing with emergencies calmly and efficiently; Must demonstrate proficiency in perceiving and acting upon relevant changes in animal behaviors and conditions; Good decision-making skills and sound judgment; Must be a team player and able to develop and maintain good working relationships; Demonstrated ability to take initiative in identifying and solving problems, recommending ideas and viable suggestions to improve operations; Valid driver’s license required for Illinois residents within 90 days of hire; valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents; Must be able to read, write, and speak English; Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by, under direction of the Lead Keeper, Veterinarians and Hospital Manager, providing experienced technical and medical support to the veterinary staff for the care provided to the animal collection and hospitalized patients.
