- Veterinary Pathologist, Animal Safety Group Leader in VMRD
Working with other dedicated staff, the incumbent will report to the Toxicology/Target Animal Safety Group Leader in VMRD/Lab Sciences/Metabolism & Safety (M&S) to serve VMRD needs for expertise in pathology, toxicology, drug development and regulatory submissions. The primary focus of this position is to bring pathology and toxicology experience to the VMRD Development and Discovery teams.
As such, this person will spend much of their time attending drug discovery and development team meetings to assure that pathology and toxicology input to the drug development process in VMRD meets all business and regulatory needs. This position will also serve to review draft safety study protocols to be conducted by VMRD staff, participate in pathology peer review of studies conducted by VMRD at the company or CRO facilities, potentially monitor safety studies conducted at CROs for M&S, and potentially serve as a GLP study director for safety studies conducted by M&S in specified facilities. The incumbent will serve as a peer review pathologist, as needed, as well as providing the pathology expertise for any study for which he/she was the study director. In addition, this pathologist may serve for necropsy duty of pharma and bios studies conducted in Richland. As a member of M&S, the incumbent will have access to the company’s global pathology knowledge, and she/he will be expected to utilize that global knowledge to the company’s advantage. The incumbent will participate actively in the formation of regulatory submissions of compounds for marketing status approval worldwide. This person will likely travel to regulatory bodies to support drug development plans, as well as the conclusions of the studies conducted to support the safety of the drugs developed for VMRD. It is possible that the incumbent would travel on Due Diligence visits to evaluate potential acquisition candidates. In addition to working with other team members, this person will assist his/her management with budgeting projections and urgent team needs.

Nature of Work: Veterinary Supervisor is responsible for the enforcement of the relevant provisions of the Code of West Virginia, Chapter 19, Article 2B: Inspection of Meat and Poultry, and rules governing such inspection in licensed establishments in the Circuit. The Veterinary Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of all aspects of meat and poultry inspection activities in the Circuit, oversight of inspectors, training of new inspectors in antemortem examination and postmortem inspection, administrative matters, and cooperation with management of regulated establishments.
Examples of Work: Daily supervision of inspectors, monitoring inspectional activity in all aspects, instruction of inspectors in proper inspectional procedures, techniques and dispositions, performing final veterinary dispositions of diseased animals or carcasses, administrative functions for the circuit: work assignment, scheduling inspectors’ work at regulated establishments, interacting with plant management. Working Conditions: The position requires extensive travel to inspected plants (5 days per week) performing duties under difficult environmental conditions (heat, high humidity, sharp objects, slippery floors, etc.).
