An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated veterinary specialist to join the small animal surgery team at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney (UVTHS). This is a unique opportunity to take on an important leadership role in an outstanding, AVMA-accredited veterinary teaching hospital, in one of the world’s most desirable cities. The successful applicant must have a veterinary degree and a postgraduate qualification that allows for registration as a Specialist in small animal surgery in NSW.
The UVTHS has benefited recently from major financial support. The Valentine Charlton Cat Centre, which opened in 2004, has gained international recognition as a state-of-the-art feline referral facility, generating large clinical research output and offering residency training programs in feline medicine. The $2.8 million Canine Centre opened in early 2008 and presents as one of the most sophisticated teaching hospitals in the country. New equipment acquisitions include MRI, CT, computed radiography and videoendoscopy. The hospital is supported by an extensive range of specialist staff in orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic imaging, medicine, neurology, dermatology and ophthalmology.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with Professor Kenneth Johnson and a team of highly qualified surgical and support staff. The appointee would be expected to play a leading role in expanding the UVTHS small animal surgery referral service, to actively participate in the Faculty’s clinical research programs and to provide excellent teaching to undergraduates and postgraduate veterinarians. The appointee must have the flexibility to work independently and as part of a team while demonstrating outstanding clinical and communication skills to deliver quality teaching, research and clinical practice. A proven record of financial responsibility is essential.
The Faculty has an excellent reputation in learning and teaching. To maintain this, the appointee will be required to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education). Participation in the development and implementation of the UVTHS and Surgery Unit Strategic Plans will be expected. Experience in mentoring and managing staff is desirable. For appointment as Senior Lecturer the following additional requirements must be met: a postgraduate research based degree; evidence of research publications relevant to small animal surgery; experience in managing and mentoring staff; and demonstrated administrative skills.
The position is full-time continuing, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
Remuneration package: a competitive salary package (which includes a base salary, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation), plus a Discretionary Salary Supplement will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Level of appointment and responsibility will be commensurate with skills and experience. Some relocation cost support will be provided and visa sponsorship will be available for the successful appointee if required.

Participate in client communication and education, explaining administration of medications, follow-up care, diet recommendations and general animal care. Flexibility in working hours is required to ensure that the job is done properly (willing to work beyond scheduled hours if necessary).
Housekeeping and Maintenance:
Advise Medical Director or Technical Supervisor of any conditions that are unsafe, including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules.
Examinations:
* Ability to perform a cursory examination of an animal.
* Ability to use a stethoscope and otoscope.
* Ability to recognize fleas, ticks and other external parasites.
* Ability to recognize other potential health care issues, i.e., dental signs and behavior patterns that suggest an animal may be in pain, and necessity of veterinarian’s examination.

Records:
Keep records up to date. This includes client records with charges, medical history, vaccination status, medications administered, laboratory reports, etc. Handwriting must be neat and legible.
Anesthesia:
Understand how to maintain and use the hospital’s inhalation anesthetic machines. Administer certain anesthetics under direct doctor supervision. Monitor anesthesia under direct doctor supervision. Familiarity with procedures and antidotes for an anesthesia emergency.
Surgery:
* Understand how to prep animals for aseptic surgery.
* Able to place a catheter
* Understand principles of aseptics in the surgery room and participate in maintaining sterile conditions.
* Know the names and general uses of surgical instruments and equipment.
* Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and packs.
* Be willing and able to assist the doctor with certain surgical procedures.
Radiology:
* Position animals properly for radiography.
* Know how to properly use positioning devices so that patients may be radiographed without the requirement of assistants holding animals in place whenever possible.
* Develop radiographs.
* Maintain and care for all radiology equipment.
* Practice all safety regulations in regard to radiology.
Dentistry:
Understand how to set up and use the hospital’s dental prophylactics unit. Perform routine dental prophylactics procedures as directed by a staff veterinarian. Know general uses of the hospital’s instrumentation for endodontic, exodontic procedures, etc.
Laboratory:
* Draw blood samples.
* Collect stool and urine samples.
* Prepare lab request forms.
* Perform certain laboratory tests:

Pharmacy:
