Minimum Education, Experience and Certification: Must be comfortable around animals and able to handle fractious animals with appropriate equipment; One year of experience in animal handling required; Veterinary Technician License/Certification and/or equivalent experience in a related field required; Valid Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required; Euthanasia Technician certification and Temperament Evaluator certification both required after hire; High school diploma or equivalent required; Must have excellent public relations skills and be public service oriented.     The Critical Care Services in the Center for Comparative Medicine service provides fee-for-service support to MGH researchers involving anesthesia and surgical services, as well as veterinary diagnostics. This person will provide direct critical care services focusing predominantly on peri-operative care and anesthesia administration for both rodent and large animal research. Additional duties include supporting training initiatives of CCM and MGH research staff in anesthesia and post-procedural recovery for small and large animal anesthesia. Back up support to the diagnostic services will include collection of appropriate specimens and a basic interpretation of clinical pathology results. Directly administer anesthesia to large animals in preparation for surgery. * Monitoring vital signs, maintaining required documentation and medical records, responding to adverse reactions and alerting Investigator of concerns or problems. Pre- and post-operative care, including, but not limited to, transport to recovery, wound care, suture removal, and monitoring vital signs during recovery. Administer medications as required/scheduled. Provide feedback to investigators and veterinary staff on animal health related issues. Process clinical pathology blood samples using specialized pathology testing equipment and reagents. Qualifications B.S. degree or equivalent in animal science, biology, zoology, molecular biology or related field, from an accredited institution preferred. Associates Degree in related field plus demonstrated experience may be considered. Minimum of one year of prior veterinary anesthesia experience involving at least 3 different species required.
