Completed formal education leading to the degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.), or its equivalent as recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state. Experience with animal techniques and procedures used in Toxicology studies. Completion of formal residency or training program in veterinary medicine and surgery or 3 5 years experience in laboratory animal medicine.
•Perform physical and diagnostic examinations on all species of animals purchased.
•Record and report general health status and any health problems encountered or anticipated to the departments and/or the investigators to whom the specific research animals are assigned.
•Prescribe and/or administer therapeutic regimens for all species in accordance with departmental requirements and standards or study protocols.
•Collect or assist in the collection of various specimens from all species as required for diagnosis and/or evaluation.
•Perform anesthesia or surgery on all species for purposes of treatment of specific health problems.
•On a routine basis inspect the Animal Facilities, vendors and other sites where animals, owned or leased by Novartis, are maintained and provide a written report of these inspections.
•Interact and consult with the LAS staff and the professional, scientific, technical, administrative, maintenance and housekeeping staffs, vendors and personnel outside of Novartis, as required for the effective and efficient operation of the department.
•Assist the LAS Director in the review of Department policies, procedures and standards to ensure that they are in line with those of the company, government or other agencies.
•Attend and participate in both internal and external meetings, conferences, conventions, seminars, workshops, continuing education courses, etc., as assigned, required or necessary for the maintenance of further enhancement of knowledge and abilities in this or related areas.
•Initiate and follow through on the specification and purchase of additional equipment and accessories.
•Train or assist in training associates in animal care and use procedures and issues as their jobs require.

Provide clinical, surgical and other veterinary services as required for all species of research animals used at Novartis. Consult as needed with investigators, staff and others on animal health, information, queries, problems and models. Assist in maintaining compliance with all existing regulations, requirements and standards; including, but not limited to: Departmental SOP’s, Federal (USDA, FDA-GLP), State, Local and AAALACi.
